Vianden is a small Our valley town of about 1,400 people whose restored hilltop castle is Luxembourg's headline sight. The old centre is walkable in an hour, the castle and chairlift fill a day, and free public transport makes it an easy add-on to a Luxembourg City or Éislek trip. One night is enough; two if you want the forest trails.

Getting around

Everything in the centre is on foot: Grand-Rue runs from the bridge to the castle path in about 15 minutes uphill. The chairlift (télésiège) covers the steep part for a few euros, and a small tourist train runs in summer from near the bridge up to the castle. Buses stop at the station on the edge of town.

Watch out

Safety

Vianden is a low-risk town; the real hazards are the steep, uneven castle path, summer motorbike traffic on the N17 and slippery riverside stones. Emergency numbers are 112 and 113.
  • Parking in the village is paid with a 3-hour limit and fills up on summer weekends; the castle car park is the fallback.
  • The chairlift-to-castle path is rough and steep: wear shoes with grip, not sandals.
  • Many restaurants close early or shut entirely outside the main season; check before a late dinner.
  • The castle and museum keep shorter hours from November to February; confirm before travelling.
