Ulan Ude is the capital of Buryatia and the first major Russian stop on the Trans-Siberian line from Mongolia. The centre is compact and walkable, the Buryat and Buddhist layer is the reason to get off the train, and the city works as a base for Lake Baikal's eastern shore and the spa village of Arshan. Two nights covers the core; three if you add a day trip.

Getting around

The tourist centre is compact and walkable. Marshrutkas, buses and a few tram routes cover the rest for under RUB 30 a ride. Taxis are plentiful but drivers rarely speak English: agree the fare or use an app before you get in.

Safety

The centre is calm and walkable by day. The real risks are winter cold, unlit side streets after dark and taxis with no meter: agree the fare first.
  • Winter is genuinely dangerous cold: January averages around -27°C at night, and lower has been recorded. Pack for it or come in summer.
  • Many buses and marshrutkas to Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, Arshan and Chita leave from the train station as well as the South bus station: confirm the departure point when you buy.
  • Read your own government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything; this desk does not plan around it.
