Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Bremen is a compact Hanseatic city on the Weser, 1 hour by train from Hamburg. The UNESCO-listed Town Hall, Roland statue, Böttcherstraße and Schnoor quarter sit within 15 minutes of each other, so a single day covers the core. Add a second day only for the Universum science centre, the Überseestadt harbour museums or a Weser bike ride.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The old town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Trams and buses run every 5–10 minutes in the day; buy a day pass if you make three or more rides. Bremen is flat and bike-friendly: rental shops sit near the Hauptbahnhof. Taxis cost about €1.25/km.

Two trains an hour; a full day is enough for the harbour and Speicherstadt.

Bremerhaven

go

Harbour, Klimahaus and the emigrant museum; half a day plus travel.

Oldenburg

caution

Pleasant small city but thin on sights; go only if you have a spare day.

Verden

skip

Door to door: About 40 min

Train from Bremen Hauptbahnhof, about 30 min

Horse town with little for a short trip; not worth the slot.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Altstadt / Marktplatz

Walk to every old-town sight; quietest at night; highest prices.

Bahnhofsviertel

Around the Hauptbahnhof; cheapest beds, 15 min walk or two tram stops to the market square.

Viertel (Ostertor)

Bars, cafés and restaurants; 20 min walk from the centre, tram 2 or 3.

Neustadt

South of the Weser; cheaper, calmer, 10 min by tram across the bridge.

Watch out

Safety

Bremen is a normal, safe German city by day. At night the area around the Hauptbahnhof and the discos on the Viertel edges see drink-related trouble: keep to lit streets and watch your bag on trams.
  • Tickets on regional trains must be bought before boarding; on trams and buses you can buy on board for a little more.
  • Night trams and buses (marked N) run only on Friday/Saturday and Saturday/Sunday nights, leaving the Hauptbahnhof at :30 each hour.
  • The Schnoor lanes are cobbled and narrow: wheeled luggage is awkward there.
  • Some Weser riverbank paths flood after heavy rain; check local signage.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Bremen. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Nov–Feb (grey, wet, 4–6 °C) · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 4 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for BRE: last tram times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Marktplatz, Schnoor, the Wallanlagen and the Viertel.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Town Hall tours, Dom tower, Universum, Kunsthalle) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile-weather fixtures so rainy days route to museums instead of the river.
