Bremen
Give Bremen one full day and one night: the market square, Böttcherstraße and Schnoor are a 3-hour walk, and the rest is museums.
Bremen is a compact Hanseatic city on the Weser, 1 hour by train from Hamburg. The UNESCO-listed Town Hall, Roland statue, Böttcherstraße and Schnoor quarter sit within 15 minutes of each other, so a single day covers the core. Add a second day only for the Universum science centre, the Überseestadt harbour museums or a Weser bike ride.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Tickets on regional trains must be bought before boarding; on trams and buses you can buy on board for a little more.
- Night trams and buses (marked N) run only on Friday/Saturday and Saturday/Sunday nights, leaving the Hauptbahnhof at :30 each hour.
- The Schnoor lanes are cobbled and narrow: wheeled luggage is awkward there.
- Some Weser riverbank paths flood after heavy rain; check local signage.
Bremen is a normal, safe German city by day. At night the area around the Hauptbahnhof and the discos on the Viertel edges see drink-related trouble: keep to lit streets and watch your bag on trams.
