Anticosti is a 222 km island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence with one village, Port-Menier (about 250 people), and a UNESCO-listed fossil coastline. There is no road off the island, no mobile network and no hospital. Almost everyone who comes is here for deer hunting, salmon fishing or the national park; everyone else should treat it as a 3-night expedition, not a beach stop.

There is one main gravel road along the island; bring or rent a vehicle in Port-Menier. Guided packages often include transport. Distances are long: Port-Menier to the far east end is a full day each way.

Watch out

Safety

Remote and low-crime, but the real risks are distance and weather: no hospital, no cell coverage, long gravel roads with deer and moose. Carry a first-aid kit, water and a paper map, and file a plan with someone on the mainland.
  • No hospital on the island: one small clinic in Port-Menier, and help can be over 160 km away.
  • No mobile phone network on the island. Tell someone your plan before you go.
  • Deer are everywhere, including in the village; hitting a moose on the road can be fatal. Drive slowly at dusk and dawn.
  • Fuel and groceries come by boat: fill up and buy supplies in Port-Menier before heading east.
  • The supply boat runs about one round trip a week and stops in early October; book onward connections 36–48 h after the scheduled arrival.
