Zaragoza is Aragon's capital on the Ebro, halfway between Madrid and Barcelona on the AVE line. Two cathedrals, a Moorish palace and Roman ruins sit within a walkable old town, and beds cost far less than in either big city. Most travellers use it as a 1–2 night rail stop; it also works as a base for day trips across Aragon.

Getting around

The old town is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Buses and one tram line use a rechargeable card (€7 at tobacco kiosks, €0.74 per journey, free line changes within an hour); a single ticket from the driver is €1.70 cash. Taxis are plentiful and metered.

Watch out

Safety

Zaragoza is a low-risk city; the real issues are pickpockets around Plaza del Pilar in crowds, the Cierzo wind, and summer heat. Standard city precautions are enough.
  • The Cierzo wind from the northwest is cold and dry even on sunny spring and autumn days: pack a warm layer.
  • August: many bars and small shops close for the month and daytime heat passes 35°C.
  • Free parking in the centre is scarce; most street parking is metered for 1–2 hours.
  • La Seo closes during mass at times: check the posted hours before you pay.
