  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Hagerstown is the seat of Washington County and the largest city in western Maryland, sitting where I-70 meets I-81 about 75 minutes from Washington, Baltimore and Harrisburg. It is a car town: the sights are spread along US 40 and the interstates, and the main draws are Antietam battlefield, the outlet mall and the museums downtown. Most travellers use it as a single overnight stop, not a base.

Arrive & move

Getting around

A car is close to essential: only downtown is walkable, and the battlefield, the outlet mall and the speedway are all outside the centre. County Commuter buses cover the city and county, and taxis can be called or hailed downtown. I-70 and I-81 intersect southwest of the city, with US 40 and US 11 crossing in the centre.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg

go

Door to door: About 35–45 min

I-70 west to MD-65 south, about 25 min by car

The main reason to stop here. Allow half a day for the driving tour and the visitor centre.

Boonsboro

go

Door to door: About 20 min

US 40 Alt west, about 15 min by car

Small town at the foot of South Mountain; pairs with a battlefield or Appalachian Trail stop.

Hancock, Maryland

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

I-70 west, about 35 min by car

C&O Canal towpath access; thin on services, so fuel up first.

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

I-70 east to I-270 south, about 75–90 min by car

A full day, not a quick hop; many travellers sleep here and drive in for the cheaper rates.

Frederick, Maryland

go

Door to door: About 35 min

I-70 east, about 30 min by car

Better dining and a walkable historic centre if Hagerstown feels thin.

Whitetail Resort, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

I-70 west to PA-16, about 40 min by car

Skiing on 16 trails in winter; check snow conditions and lift hours before driving.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Arts and Entertainment District

Walkable to the Maryland Theatre, Public Square and the Potomac Street restaurants; the only part of town you can do on foot.

Valley Mall / I-81 Exit 5 area

Cluster of chain hotels and the indoor mall; easiest if you are driving through and want parking at the door.

Dual Highway (US 40 East) / I-70 Exit 32

Budget and mid-range motels on the eastern approach; handy for an early start toward Baltimore or Frederick.

I-81 Exit 9 / airport area

Quieter hotels near HGR; best if you fly in or are heading north to Pennsylvania.

Watch out

Safety

Hagerstown is a normal small American city: the main risks are driving on I-70/I-81 and walking quiet downtown blocks after dark. Park in lit lots, keep valuables out of sight, and call 911 for anything urgent.
  • Distances between sights are car distances, not walk distances — do not plan a walking day between downtown, the mall and the battlefield.
  • Summer is hot and humid; winter brings ice on the roads and the Appalachian ridges.
  • Some downtown blocks are quiet after dark; stick to the lit Arts and Entertainment District blocks.
  • Antietam and the C&O Canal are outdoor sites with limited shade and services — carry water.
  • Outlet and mall hours vary by season and holiday: check before you drive out.
