Queimada dos Britos
Skip unless you are trekking the Lençóis Maranhenses between Atins and Santo Amaro: a half-day walk-in, hammock overnight, no shops or phone signal.
Queimada dos Britos is a tiny oasis settlement inside Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, about 7 km northwest of Baixa Grande. There are no roads, no shops, no cell coverage — only a handful of families who serve meals and rent hammock space to trekkers crossing the dunes. It is not a destination on its own; it is a rest point on the multi-day trail between Atins and Santo Amaro.

Scams and watch-outs
- No shops: bring all food, water and cash (reais) from Barreirinhas or Santo Amaro.
- No cell signal: Vivo has the best coverage with an external antenna; otherwise offline maps only.
- River crossings may be impassable in the rainy season: check conditions in Barreirinhas before setting out.
- Quad bikes are for residents only; tourists cannot hire them.
Remote and safe from crime, but the trekking risks are real: heat exhaustion, dehydration, getting lost in the dunes. Carry at least 3 L of water per person, a GPS or offline map, and tell someone your route.
