Milford Sound
Milford Sound is the trip most people come for, and the one that needs the most planning. The road from Queenstown runs through Te Anau and then into Fiordland National Park, about four hours each way. Doing it as a self-drive day means eight hours at the wheel plus a cruise, which is why most visitors book a coach-and-cruise package instead.
A coach day typically leaves Queenstown before 7am and returns around 7–8pm. The cruise itself is short, usually under two hours, so the day is mostly travel. If you have the time, staying a night in Te Anau turns Milford into a relaxed morning rather than a marathon.
The Milford road can close in winter after snow or heavy rain, and the Homer Tunnel is single lane in places. Check road status the day before and keep a spare day in your plan.

Glenorchy and Arrowtown

Arrowtown is the other short trip. It is a former gold-mining town about 20 minutes away, with a walkable main street, old Chinese settlement and autumn colour in April. It pairs well with Gibbston, which is on the same road back toward Queenstown.

Wānaka and the Crown Range
Wānaka is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Queenstown, either over the Crown Range road or through the Kawarau Gorge. It is a quieter lake town with its own short walks, a lakefront and the start of the road to Mount Aspiring National Park. A full day is enough to drive over, walk part of the lakefront or Mount Iron, and drive back.
The Crown Range road is the highest sealed road in New Zealand and can be icy in winter. In summer it is a straightforward drive with a lookout near the top. If you would rather not drive, there are shuttle services between the two towns.
- Cardrona, between the two towns, is a small historic hotel stop and a ski base in winter.
- Allow extra time if you plan to walk Roys Peak — it is a half-day hike on its own.
Gibbston wine valley
The Gibbston valley is about 25 minutes from Queenstown on the road to Cromwell, and it is the closest wine area to town. Several cellar doors sit within a short drive of each other, mostly pinot noir. Tastings are usually a small fee, often waived if you buy a bottle.
Because the valley is on a main road, a wine tour or a hired driver is the sensible option if you plan to taste more than one or two. Self-drive visitors should pick one stop and keep the driving to the sober person.

Costs
Short trips by car cost little beyond fuel and parking. Queenstown parking near the centre is paid and time-limited, so check signs before leaving the car. Full-day tours are the main expense, and Milford is the priciest because of the distance.
If you are doing several trips, a rental car for a few days is usually cheaper than booking a tour for each one. Compare that against the cost of a Milford coach day, which is hard to beat by self-driving once fuel and the cruise are added.

Tips
Start early. The road to Glenorchy and the Crown Range get busy once tour buses leave town, and parking at Arrowtown fills on weekends. Winter driving needs care on the Crown Range and the Milford road; carry chains if you are heading over the passes between May and September.
