The trips in detail
Bathurst sits in the coastal hills east of Queenstown, reached via the N2 and the R67. The drive itself is the point: open grassland, then the green coastal belt. Bathurst has a small historic centre and is a natural lunch stop before carrying on towards Port Alfred or Grahamstown. It is a long day — leave by 07:00 and expect to be back after dark in winter.
Wartrail and New England are the highland farming districts north-east of Queenstown, on gravel roads that climb into the Witteberg. This is the best short trip for scenery and walking, and the roads are passable in a normal car in dry weather. After heavy rain, check conditions before setting out; a 4x4 is safer on the rougher sections.
Graaff-Reinet is the classic Karoo town, with the Valley of Desolation in the Camdeboo area nearby. It is a full day from Queenstown and arguably better as an overnight, but the drive is straightforward on the N9.
