Queenstown airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Queenstown, Eastern Cape is a small inland town, not the resort town of the same name in New Zealand. Its airport handles light regional traffic, so the transfer market is small and informal: a handful of local taxi operators, occasional ride-hail cars, and guesthouses that arrange a driver for arriving guests.

That means the decision is simple. If someone is meeting you, take it. If not, book a car before you fly rather than hoping to find one at the terminal. The table below sets out what each option costs and how long it takes.

Local taxis in Queenstown generally work on agreed fares rather than meters. Ask the price before you load bags, and confirm whether it covers the whole group. Drivers usually accept cash; card machines are not a given.

Uber and Bolt operate across South African cities, but coverage in small Eastern Cape towns is patchy. Open the app before departure and check whether cars are shown near the airport at your arrival time. If the map is empty, treat a taxi or a pre-booked driver as your plan A.

If you are arriving after dark, arrange the pick-up in advance and ask the driver to wait with your name. Airport terminals in small towns can be quiet and unlit once the last flight has cleared.

Most guesthouses and lodges in and around Queenstown will arrange an airport pick-up if you ask when you book. This is the least stressful option on a first visit and usually costs a little more than a street taxi.

If Queenstown is a stop on a longer Eastern Cape trip, collect a rental car at the airport instead. Self-drive is the default way to reach Bathurst, the Wartrail and New England area, or the interior, and rates run about R400-900 a day depending on vehicle and season. Check one-way fees if you plan to drop the car elsewhere, and keep bags out of sight when you park in town.

The town trip is short, so the fare is modest by South African standards: roughly R80-200 by taxi or ride-hail, or R150-350 for a pre-booked transfer, in 2026. Those are estimates for a small-town market with few operators, so treat them as a band rather than a fixed price.

Tipping follows the national habit. Add about 10% for a taxi or transfer driver who handles your bags, or round up to the nearest R10-20. Car guards in town expect R5-20 when you leave a parking spot.

Download offline maps and save your accommodation address before you land; mobile data in the area can be slow. If you want a local SIM or eSIM, sort it out before arrival rather than at a small regional terminal.

Tap water is generally safe in South African towns, but in municipalities where infrastructure is under strain it is worth asking your host. Plugs are the large round-pin type M, plus types C and N, at 230 V.

Shops and small-town businesses often close on Sunday afternoons, and everything shuts on Christmas Day. If you land on a Sunday, make sure your transfer is confirmed in writing beforehand.
