Qatar on a budget: daily costs and money-saving tips
A budget day in Qatar costs about QAR 230–460 (roughly $63–126) per person: QAR 150–250 for a bed, QAR 50–90 for cafeteria food, QAR 6–30 for the metro, and free sights. Go October–April and book early; rooms, not food, decide your total.

Details
Qatar is not a cheap country, but a budget trip works if you treat the bed as the one thing to get right. Outside hotel restaurants, food is inexpensive: a cafeteria shawarma or a plate of rice and grilled meat runs QAR 8–25, and karak tea from a corner cafeteria costs QAR 1–3. The Doha Metro caps a day of travel at QAR 6, and the Corniche, Souq Waqif, Katara and Msheireb are free to walk.
The main paid sights are the museums. A non-resident ticket to the Museum of Islamic Art or the National Museum of Qatar is about QAR 50 (check current prices and free-entry days). A shared desert safari to the Inland Sea runs QAR 250–400 per person and is the one splurge most budget travellers still take.
Alcohol is the trap. It is served only in hotels and licensed venues, at QAR 45–65 a beer, so a couple of drinks can cost more than your room. Skip it, or budget for it deliberately.
Book the room first. Stopover packages sold with Qatar Airways and Discover Qatar can cut room prices sharply, and hostels are rare, so a private budget room is the normal choice. Rates swing hard: National Day, F1 week and big conferences push prices up, while summer (May–September) brings them down, at the cost of doing almost everything indoors.

Tips
- Use the metro and the free Doha Metro feeder buses instead of taxis; a day is capped at QAR 6.
- Eat where the workers eat: cafeterias in Souq Waqif, Najma and Al Sadd, not hotel restaurants.
- Carry about QAR 200 in small notes for taxis, souq stalls and tips; cards work almost everywhere else.
- Check whether service is already added to a restaurant bill before tipping 10%.
- Travel October–April for outdoor sightseeing; if you come in summer for cheaper rooms, plan museum and mall days.
- Compare stopover packages with Qatar Airways and Discover Qatar against booking a room yourself.
- Book desert trips and museum tickets directly rather than through hotel concierges.
Notes
The QAR is pegged to the US dollar at about 3.64, so dollar prices stay stable. Prices here are 2026 estimates and change with season and events.
