East, Pune: neighborhood guide

East Pune is the city's working and airport side: IT parks, hospitals, malls and new apartment towers spread across Kharadi, Viman Nagar, Hadapsar and Wagholi, with Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar as the older, greener, more expensive pocket near the river.

It is not a sightseeing district in the way the old city is. You come here to sleep near the airport, to work, or to eat and go out in Koregaon Park. Days here are built around traffic: the airport road and the Pune–Ahmednagar road carry heavy commuter volumes at peak hours, so a 6 km trip can take 30 minutes or more.

The area is broad and low-density compared with central Pune. Expect gated communities, wide arterial roads with fast traffic, and fewer walkable lanes. The Mula-Mutha river and its bridges separate east from the centre.

Stay east if your trip is short and flight-led, if you are in Pune for work in Kharadi or Hadapsar, or if you want Koregaon Park's restaurant and bar scene on your doorstep. It also suits travellers who prefer newer hotels with parking and pools over heritage buildings.

Skip it if you plan to spend your days at Shaniwar Wada, the old city markets and the Deccan museums. Those sit west and central, and you would cross the city twice a day. Families with early flights and business travellers get the most out of this side; backpackers usually find better value and atmosphere closer to the centre.

Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar hold most of the area's restaurants: bakeries, South Indian breakfast places, Irani-style cafés, pan-Asian and European kitchens, and bars that stay busy late. Viman Nagar and Kharadi add mall food courts and chains that suit a quick meal near a hotel.

For local food, look for Maharashtrian thali places and misal pav joints along the main roads; a plate of misal is a breakfast or lunch dish, usually spicy. Pune's own snacks — misal pav, sabudana khichdi, bhel — are cheap and widely available. Vegetarian food is the default in most of these kitchens, and many places are pure veg.

Prices are 2026 estimate: a simple thali or misal plate ₹120–250, a mid-range restaurant meal for two ₹800–1,500, a coffee ₹150–300. Tipping of 5–10% is expected where no service charge is added.

Pune Airport (PNQ) sits on the east side of the city, which is the main reason to base here. From Koregaon Park or Viman Nagar the transfer is short by cab; from Kharadi or Hadapsar allow more time in peak traffic. Confirm the current terminal and taxi arrangements when you book.

Pune Metro runs across the city and serves parts of the east side; check the current line map and station list before planning a car-free day, since the network has been extended in stages. App cabs (Ola, Uber) and auto-rickshaws are the practical way to move around; agree the fare or use the meter, and expect surge pricing in rain.

Pune Junction railway station is west of here, so a train departure means a cross-city cab — build in extra time. Driving is on the left; most visitors hire a car with driver rather than self-drive.
