- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Argentina ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Argentina's National Migration Directorate (Migraciones) or an Argentine consulate before booking.
- Argentina ↗Since April 2025 the official, MEP and street ('blue') dollar rates sit within a few percent of each other; a foreign card is usually the best-value way to pay, while ATM withdrawals carry high fixed fees. Rules have changed often — check before you fly.
- Argentina ↗Patagonia (El Calafate, El Chaltén, Ushuaia) is a November–March trip; in winter many services close and hiking is limited.
- Argentina ↗Since August 2026 non-resident foreigners must show insurance or pay for non-urgent care at nationally run public hospitals, and Buenos Aires City, Mendoza, Salta, Jujuy and Santa Cruz charge visitors for scheduled care; emergencies are still treated. Travel with medical insurance — check the current rules.
Puerto Iguazú is a small jungle-edge town whose only real job is the falls. The Argentine side is a full day of walking on metal catwalks; the Brazilian side is a half-day of wide panoramas. Two nights covers both without rushing, and the town itself is a 20-minute walk end to end.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The town is walkable. Buses to the Argentine park entrance leave from the bus terminal roughly every 20 minutes and take about 30 minutes; the same road passes Güira Oga. Taxis run on fixed prices to both parks, so distance from your hotel matters little. Buses also cross to Foz do Iguaçu and to Ciudad del Este.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Brazilian side of the falls (Foz do Iguaçu)
goDoor to door: Half a day, 1–1.5 h each way with border control
Bus from the terminal toward Foz do Iguaçu, then a local bus to the park entrance; or a fixed-price taxi that waits
Different views, not a repeat of the Argentine side. Carry your passport and the immigration slips.
Ciudad del Este and Itaipú Dam (Paraguay)
cautionDoor to door: Half to a full day
Bus or taxi to the border, then a local bus; some buses cross without stopping in Brazil
Check current border rules and your own visa situation before crossing; the dam visit needs a booked tour.
San Ignacio Miní
overnightDoor to door: A full day or an overnight stop
Long-distance bus toward Posadas, then a local connection
Jesuit mission ruins on the road to Posadas; better as a stop than a return day trip.
Eat & sleep
Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Town centre (Av. Victoria Aguirre and Av. Córdoba)
Restaurants, money changers and shops on foot; the bus terminal sits on Av. Córdoba.
Near the bus terminal
Best for early park buses and one-night stops; hostels and small hotels within a few blocks.
Ruta 12 / jungle edge
Hotels and cabins in green surroundings, 5–10 min by taxi from the centre; quieter, fewer food options on foot.
