Day trip from Prague to Cesky Krumlov: how to get there and what to do

Three practical options: long-distance bus, train with a change, or a door-to-door shuttle. The bus is the fastest and cheapest, the train is the most comfortable, and the shuttle is the only one that drops you at your hotel.

Buses run from Prague's Na Knížecí station (metro Anděl) direct to Český Krumlov's bus station, a 10-minute walk from the old town. Journey time is around 2 h 45 min–3 h 15 min depending on traffic and stops. Several operators run the route; book online a day or two ahead in July and August, when afternoon departures sell out (check).

Trains from Prague's main station usually require a change at České Budějovice, which adds time and a platform transfer. The total is roughly 3–3.5 hours each way. The upside is legroom, a table and no road traffic. Direct seasonal services have run in summer in past years, so check the current timetable before you commit (check).

Shuttle vans pick up at Prague hotels and take about 3 hours. They cost more per person but save the walk at both ends and are the easiest option for families or anyone with luggage. Shared vans are usually 800–1,200 CZK one way; private transfers cost considerably more (2026 estimate, check).

Driving takes about 2 h 30 min via the D3 and is only worth it if you are continuing to South Bohemia or Austria. Parking inside the historic centre is restricted; use the designated lots on the edge of town and walk in (check).

A workable day looks like this: leave Prague on the first or second morning departure, arrive around 10:00, spend the middle of the day in town, and take a late-afternoon bus or train back to reach Prague by about 21:00.

Start at the castle. The interior is guided-tour only and generally opens April–October; buy a timed ticket online in summer or you may queue for an hour (check). The baroque theatre and the tower are separate tickets. If the interiors are closed, the gardens and the cloaked bridge below the castle are still open and free to walk.

Then drop into the old town: the main square, the Church of St Vitus, and the river loop that wraps around the castle rock. The walk from the square up to the castle takes about 10 minutes on a slope. Allow 2–3 hours for the castle complex and 1–2 hours for the town.

Eat lunch away from the main square, where prices are highest. South Bohemian cooking is heavy: roast pork with dumplings and cabbage, duck, and freshwater fish. Vegetarian options exist but are limited in the traditional pubs (check).

If you have time left, the Egon Schiele Art Centrum and the regional museum fill an hour each. Rafts and canoes run on the Vltava in summer; a short float is a good way to see the town from the water (check).

A day trip by bus is the cheapest version: roughly 400–700 CZK return, plus 200–350 CZK for a castle ticket and 250–450 CZK for lunch. Budget about 1,000–1,500 CZK per person for the day, or roughly 40–60 USD (2026 estimate).

The train costs a little more and the shuttle van more again, but both remove the walk from the bus station. Castle interiors, the tower and the baroque theatre are ticketed separately; check the current prices and opening months before you go, because the interiors close outside the main season (check).

Card payment is widely accepted in restaurants and shops, but carry some cash for small stalls and for the bus if you buy on board.

If you can, yes. Český Krumlov is a small town inside a river loop, and the day-trip crowds thin sharply after about 17:00, when the coaches leave. An evening on the square and a morning before the first buses arrive are the reason to sleep there.

One night is enough for most travellers; two nights lets you add a walk or a bike ride into the surrounding countryside. Guesthouses and small hotels inside the old town fill up in July and August, so book weeks ahead (check).

Staying also fixes the day-trip problem: you stop paying for six hours of travel in a single day. If your itinerary already includes South Bohemia, use Krumlov as an overnight stop between Prague and Austria rather than a return trip.

If you only have one free day in Prague, the day trip still works — just accept that you will see the highlights and not the town at its quietest. For a shorter, cheaper alternative from Prague, Kutná Hora is about an hour away.

Český Krumlov sits in South Bohemia, about 170 km south of Prague, on the Vltava river. The bus and train stations are both on the north-east edge of the historic centre, roughly a 10-minute walk from the main square. The castle stands on the rock above the river loop, on the west side of town.
