Portugal in April: what to expect

April is a transition month: the Atlantic rain belt is retreating north, so the further south you go, the drier and sunnier it gets. Lisbon and the centre sit in the middle — mild days, some showery spells, and long evenings by the end of the month. Porto, Braga and the Douro Valley are still the wettest parts of the country, and Peneda-Gerês can be muddy underfoot.

The Alentejo and the Algarve are the reliable choices. Évora and the Alentejo plain are green and covered in wildflowers, with daytime temperatures comfortable for walking. The Algarve has the most sunshine in the country, but the Atlantic keeps the sea cool: fine for a quick dip, not for long swims. Madeira stays spring-like on the south coast; the Azores are still changeable, with four seasons in a day. Sintra runs about 5 °C cooler than Lisbon and is often foggy.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a light jacket or fleece for mornings and evenings, a compact umbrella or rain shell, and layers you can shed by midday.

April is medium season: busier and pricier than February or March, well below June to August. The two spikes are Easter week, when Portuguese families travel and coastal hotels fill, and 25 April (Freedom Day), a national holiday that makes a long weekend. Outside those dates, Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve are comfortable.

Expect hotel rates roughly 20–30% below peak summer, and flights cheaper than in July. Trains and intercity buses rarely sell out except around Easter; book Alfa Pendular seats a few days ahead if your dates are fixed. Attractions such as the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon and the Livraria Lello in Porto still draw queues — go at opening time.

Easter is the big one. Good Friday and Easter Sunday fall in late March or April depending on the year, and Braga holds some of the country's best-known processions. Expect full hotels and higher fares for the long weekend wherever you go.

25 April is Freedom Day, marking the 1974 Carnation Revolution. It is a public holiday: expect parades and ceremonies, especially in Lisbon, and some shops and museums closed or on reduced hours. Book transport and accommodation before you commit to those dates.

Cities first. Lisbon and Porto are at their most walkable before the summer heat, and Sintra's palaces are easier to see without July queues. The Alentejo is the standout for the season: Évora, Monsaraz and the cork oak plains are green and flowering, and walking is comfortable all day.

The Algarve works for coastal walks, cycling and quiet towns such as Tavira and Lagos, but the sea is still cool. In the north, the Douro Valley is green and the roads are quiet; save the vineyard terraces for a dry forecast. Madeira is a strong April choice for levada walks and whale watching; the Azores are possible but expect cancelled flights or boat trips in bad weather.

If you have a week, the classic first-trip shape still works: Lisbon with a Sintra day trip, then Porto by Alfa Pendular train, adding the Algarve only if you have extra days.

Layer for a 10 °C swing between morning and afternoon. A light waterproof shell beats an umbrella on windy Atlantic coasts, and comfortable walking shoes matter more than sandals in April. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen — the UV index is already moderate to high in the Algarve.

For the north and the islands, add a warm mid-layer and a dry bag for electronics. If you plan to swim in the Algarve, a thin wetsuit top or rash vest makes the 16–17 °C water bearable.

March is quieter and cheaper but wetter, especially in the north. May is one of the best months of the year: warmer, longer days, and beaches not yet full. June brings the Santos Populares festivals in Lisbon and Porto, along with high-season prices.
