Porto de Galinhas is a beach village in the municipality of Ipojuca, about 60–80 km south of Recife, and the default weekend escape for people from Recife. The draw is the reef: at very low tide the water over the coral flattens into shallow pools you can wade and snorkel, roughly two hours a day. Everything else — pousadas, restaurants, the pedestrian centre — sits within a 15-minute walk of the praça. Two nights is enough for the reef and the beach; add a third for Maracaípe, Carneiros or a buggy day.

Getting around

The village is small and walkable; the beach, praça and bus terminal are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Uber and 99 work for short hops. Frequent vans link Porto de Galinhas and Maracaípe for a few reais. Buggies can be hired with or without a driver for beach-hopping days.

Watch out

Safety

A small resort village and generally safe by day; the real risks are sharp reef rocks, strong surf away from the pools, and weekend drinking crowds. Use normal city care at night, don't leave bags on the sand, and keep to lit streets after parties.
  • The reef pools only appear at very low tide, about two hours a day: check the tide table or ask at the tourism booth before you book a jangada.
  • Weekend nights in the centre are loud — bands play in the street in front of the pousadas; ask for a room away from the praça if you want to sleep.
  • Touts at the bus stop steer arrivals to hotels at inflated prices: book ahead or walk to the place you chose.
  • Rocks around the reef and lagoon are sharp — wear something on your feet in the water.
  • ATMs exist (24Horas, Caixa) but not every bank; bring a card and some cash for vans, beach vendors and small pousadas.
