Port Angeles is the largest town on the Olympic Peninsula and the practical front door to Olympic National Park: Hurricane Ridge road starts 3 km south of downtown, and the Elwha valley is 18 km west on US-101. Downtown is a working waterfront of a few blocks, a ferry dock to Victoria BC, and a bus hub. Most travellers sleep here 1–2 nights, drive into the park by day, and use it as a supply stop before Forks or the coast.

Getting around

A car is the default: US-101 runs through town and the park road leaves from the south edge. Clallam Transit routes 20, 22, 24 and 26 cover the city, fare $1 adult, no Sunday service except the Strait Shot (#123) to Bainbridge Island. Downtown is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes.

Watch out

Safety

Low street-crime risk. The real hazards are weather and roads: wet, dark winter driving on US-101, sudden closures on Hurricane Ridge Road, and cold, fast water along the strait.
  • Hurricane Ridge Road can close for snow, ice or wind at any time of year: check park conditions before you drive up.
  • The Hurricane Ridge day lodge burned down in 2023; expect temporary facilities, not the old building.
  • No buses serve most of Olympic National Park: transit drops you on US-101, not at the trailheads.
  • Summer weekends fill the Hurricane Ridge entrance; go early or take the shuttle.
  • The Coho ferry to Victoria stops for about a week each winter for refit.
