Stop for half a day on the Hume run, or sleep one night: the town centre, the old rail tunnel and a pub are a 10-minute walk apart.

Picton is the northern edge of the Southern Highlands, about an hour by train from Sydney and a 10 km detour off the Hume Motorway. The centre is small and walkable — a creek, a main street of cafes, a historic pub and a disused rail tunnel — while the rail museum and the lakes need a car. Most travellers pass through in half a day; one night suits anyone continuing south or riding the Razorback.

Get around

The centre, the bridges and the pub are walkable. Everything else — the rail museum, the lakes, the lookouts, the skydive airfield at Wilton — needs a car. Trains on the Southern Highlands line stop at Picton hourly on weekdays and about every two hours at weekends, with Opal valid; Picton Buslines and Berrima Buslines link nearby towns but do not take Opal, so buy from the driver.

  • The Mushroom Tunnel is unlit and closed to vehicles; take a torch and stay out of the way of anyone walking through.
