Philadelphia
Northwest, Philadelphia: neighborhood guide
Stay in Northwest only if you want green trails, rowhouse streets and a slower base: Manayunk and Chestnut Hill suit walkers and cyclists, not first-timers ticking off the Liberty Bell. Everyone else should sleep in Center City and ride the train out for a half day. Rain or a tight 2-day trip changes that.

What the area is like
Northwest Philadelphia is large and low-rise: rowhouses, twin homes and detached houses on hills above the Schuylkill River, with the Wissahickon Creek cutting a wooded valley through the middle. It sits north of Lehigh Avenue and west of Front Street, and most visitors only see it from a train window.
The area splits into two corridors that barely connect. On the west, the Ridge Avenue corridor runs through Roxborough, Manayunk, Wissahickon and East Falls. On the east, the Germantown Avenue corridor runs through Germantown, Mount Airy and Chestnut Hill. Wissahickon Creek and its park separate them, with only a few crossings, so plan a day on one side rather than trying to walk both.
Manayunk is the busiest stop: a hill town above the river with a Main Street of shops, galleries and restaurants, and a nightlife crowd on weekends. Roxborough next door is quieter and more residential, with its commercial strip on Ridge Avenue. East Falls sits at the end of Kelly Drive, where the riverside trail meets the neighbourhood. Germantown is the historic one, Mount Airy is leafy and mixed, and Chestnut Hill at the far end feels like a small town with a cobbled main street.
Should you stay here
Stay in Northwest if your trip is about trails, cycling and neighbourhood food, or if you are visiting someone locally. The Wissahickon valley gives you 50 km of paths from a city address, and Manayunk and Chestnut Hill have enough restaurants and cafés to fill evenings without going downtown.
Do not stay here for a first Philadelphia trip built on the historic sights. Independence Hall, the Museum of Art and Reading Terminal Market are a train ride plus a walk away, and late-night returns get thin. If you want one base for everything, look at Center City East or Center City West and treat Northwest as a day out.
Practical trade-offs: hotel supply is small and mostly small inns or chains on City Avenue, so book early in fall foliage season. A car helps for Roxborough and Chestnut Hill but is a liability on Main Street at weekends. Regional rail is the reliable option, and it stops running late.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Wissahickon Valley Park trails from the doorstep | 20–35 minutes by train to the historic sights |
| Manayunk and Chestnut Hill have real dining strips | Few hotels; most rooms are outside the neighbourhood core |
| Quieter streets, lower crime in Roxborough and Chestnut Hill (check) | Two corridors with weak cross-links; you need a car or two trains |
| Cheaper parking than Center City (check) | Regional rail thins out late at night |
| Good cycling on Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill trail | Hilly blocks; not a stroll-everywhere district |
Eating and drinking
Main Street in Manayunk is the densest eating strip: pubs, pizza, Mexican, Thai and brunch places in a few blocks, busiest Thursday to Saturday. Ridge Avenue in Roxborough is more everyday — hoagie shops, diners, coffee shops and a few sit-down restaurants. East Falls has a small cluster of markets, pizzerias and sports bars around Midvale Avenue.
On the Germantown Avenue side, Mount Airy centres on a food co-op where the main streets cross, with cafés and takeaway nearby. Chestnut Hill's Germantown Avenue has the most polished options, plus bakeries and ice cream for a walking afternoon. Germantown Avenue through Germantown itself is more scattered; eat before you go or pick something near your stop.
Valley Green Inn, on the Wissahickon trail at Valley Green, is the one place to eat inside the park; it is a sit-down spot, so check hours before you build a hike around it (check). Elsewhere, expect American pub food, Italian-American, and Vietnamese or Mexican in the Manayunk mix.
Getting there and around
Regional rail is the simplest link. From Center City, trains run to Manayunk, Germantown and Chestnut Hill on separate lines, roughly 20–35 minutes depending on the stop. Fares are zone-based; buy at the station or on the app. Buses along Ridge Avenue and Germantown Avenue fill the gaps and run more often than the trains.
By car, take I-76 to City Avenue or Ridge Avenue for the west corridor, and Germantown Avenue or Lincoln Drive for the east. Kelly Drive along the river is the scenic approach to East Falls and connects to the Schuylkill River Trail, an 8-mile (13-km) ride back to the Art Museum. Parking on residential blocks is usually free or metered; Main Street at weekend dinner time is the hard case.
On foot, Main Street Manayunk and Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy are the two walkable stretches. Between them, and between the two corridors, distances are long and hills are real — use the train, a bus or a bike. The Wissahickon paths are shared with runners, cyclists and horses, so keep left and expect mud after rain.
Questions people ask
