What each day trip actually involves
Rottnest Island is the default. Ferries leave from Fremantle (shortest crossing) and from Barrack Street in the city, and the island is car-free, so you hire a bike or use the hop-on hop-off bus. Book the ferry in advance in summer and on school holidays. A full day is enough for the quokka loop and two or three beaches; a night there is better if you want the quiet hours.
Fremantle is the easy half day: train from Perth, then the markets, the fishing boat harbour and the old streets. Pair it with Rottnest by staying in Fremantle the night before an early ferry.
The Swan Valley starts about 25–30 minutes from the city and is the closest wine region. Without a car, a guided tour is the practical option; with a car, one person stays sober. Allow half a day for two or three stops, a full day if you add a brewery and lunch.
The Pinnacles in Nambung National Park are the classic long day: roughly 2.5 hours each way on the Indian Ocean Drive, with a stop in Cervantes for lunch. Go early, because the light is best in the morning and the drive back in the dark is tiring. Wave Rock is further again, about 3.5 hours each way, and only makes sense if you have a spare day or are heading east anyway.
Margaret River is the trap. It is about 3 hours each way, which leaves almost no time for caves, beaches or wineries. Treat it as an overnight or two-night stop, not a day trip.
