Best time to visit Perth: weather, crowds and events by month

Perth sits in the south-west climate zone: hot, dry summers with a reliable afternoon sea breeze, and a cool, wet winter. The two shoulder windows — March–April and October–November — give dry, mild days without the holiday crowds or the summer price spike.

Summer (December–February) is beach season and school-holiday peak. Days commonly reach 30–35 °C and heatwaves can push past 40 °C; the sea breeze arrives most afternoons. Winter (June–August) is the cheapest and quietest stretch, with rain on roughly half the days and daytime highs near 18 °C. Spring brings wildflowers north of the city and warming days.

Crowds track the school calendar more than the weather. Mid-December to late January is the peak: accommodation, flights and hire cars cost the most and sell out first. Easter is a shorter, sharper spike. The quietest months are June–August, when rain keeps domestic visitors away and hotel rates drop.

For the best combination of weather and value, aim for late March to mid-April or mid-October to late November. Book accommodation and a hire car two to three months ahead for those windows, and three to six months ahead for the Christmas period. Prices below are 2026 estimates for a mid-range double room in the city.

Summer brings outdoor cinema, beach days and the Australia Day public holiday on 26 January, when the city's beaches are at their busiest. Autumn and spring host most of the city's festivals and food events, and the weather suits long days outside. Winter shifts the focus indoors: museums, galleries and the food and wine scene.

Two seasonal cautions matter. Summer heatwaves can push past 40 °C, so plan outdoor walks and beach time for the morning. Bushfire risk is highest in the dry summer months in the hills and outer suburbs — check fire warnings before driving out. Winter rain is steady rather than extreme, but pack a jacket and plan indoor backups.

Perth is cheaper than Sydney for beds but flights from the east coast are long and can be expensive in peak weeks. Budget roughly A$200–280 a night for a mid-range double in the shoulder months, A$150–220 in winter and A$280–400+ over Christmas–New Year. A hire car runs about A$60–90 a day outside peak, more in the holidays.

Food and drink sit in line with other Australian cities: a casual meal around A$20–30, a coffee A$5–6. Rottnest Island ferry fares and national park entry fees are separate costs; check current prices when you book.

Match your dates to what you want to do. Beach and Rottnest trips work best from November to April, with mornings before the sea breeze and afternoon heat. Wildflower drives north of Perth peak in September and October. Wine trips to the Swan Valley or Margaret River are comfortable year-round, though winter days are short.

If your dates are fixed by a flight deal, the shoulder months absorb almost any plan: dry enough for the coast, mild enough for walking, and cheaper than the summer peak.
