Best day trips from Perth: how to get there and what to see

Perth's advantage is position: the Highland line runs north from the city, and the M90 and A9 do the same by road. That makes several good days out possible without committing to a long drive.

Dunkeld is the easiest win. Trains from Perth take about 25 minutes, and the walk from the station through the town to Dunkeld Cathedral and on to the Hermitage takes an afternoon at an easy pace. The Hermitage path follows the River Braan to a small folly above a waterfall; the Douglas firs around it are the draw. Buses also run, but the train is quicker and more frequent.

Pitlochry is the classic half-day. The train ride alone is worth it as the line climbs into the hills. In town, the dam and salmon ladder, the main street and the walk out to Loch Faskally fill three or four hours. It also works as a base if you would rather stay overnight than rush back.

Kinross and Loch Leven suit a flat, gentle day. The lochside heritage trail has views to Loch Leven Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was held in 1567. Buses run from Perth, and there is parking at the trail if you drive.

St Andrews is the coast day: cathedral and castle ruins, the university streets and the famous links. Trains usually mean changing at Ladybank, so check connections; the bus is slower but direct.

Edinburgh is the big-city option and the longest sensible day. Trains from Perth run roughly hourly and take about 1 h 30. That leaves five or six hours in the city, enough for the castle area, the Royal Mile and one museum.

With a car, the map opens up. Glen Lyon, Loch Tummel and the Queen's View, Rannoch and the Angus glens are all reachable in a day but awkward or impossible by public transport. Fill the tank before leaving Perth; rural filling stations are sparse and pricier.

Fares below are 2026 estimates for a return trip from Perth, booked in advance where possible. Advance single tickets on longer routes are usually much cheaper than buying on the day.

Book advance train tickets as soon as your dates are fixed; walk-up fares on the Edinburgh route can be several times higher. Off-peak departures after the morning rush are cheaper and quieter.

Scottish weather changes fast. Take a waterproof and a warm layer even in July, and check the return train times before you set off, because rural services thin out in the evening and on Sundays.

Days are long from May to August, with daylight until late evening, which makes a late return comfortable. In winter, check for reduced timetables and short daylight before planning a long day.
