Perth airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Perth Airport is a small regional airfield at Scone, north-east of the city. It handles light aircraft and a limited number of scheduled and charter movements, so the transfer question is simpler than at a major hub: there is no station, no shuttle and no city bus at the terminal.

That leaves two realistic plans. Take a taxi or pre-booked car straight to your accommodation, or take a taxi the short distance to Perth station and continue by train or coach. If you are heading to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee or the Highlands, the second plan is usually faster overall because it puts you on the rail network without crossing the city twice.

A taxi is the default. The run into central Perth takes about 10–15 minutes depending on traffic on the A94 and the bridge approach, and should cost roughly £15–25. Airport taxis may add a pickup surcharge, and late-night or public-holiday rates are higher, so ask the fare before you get in or book a fixed price in advance.

Pre-booked transfers and private-hire cars are worth arranging if you land after the last trains, arrive on a Sunday, or are a group of three or four with luggage — the per-person cost then beats any combination of taxi plus ticket. Ride-hailing coverage in Perth is thinner than in Edinburgh or Glasgow; do not count on a car being available at the terminal within minutes.

If you are continuing by rail, ask the driver for Perth station rather than your hotel. The station sits on the edge of the centre, a short walk from most hotels, and the taxi fare is lower than a run to the far side of town.

Perth station is a genuine rail junction: ScotRail and intercity services run to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness, and the Caledonian Sleeper passes through on its overnight London route. From the station, Edinburgh and Glasgow are roughly 1 h 20–1 h 40 away, Dundee about 25 minutes, and Inverness around 2 h 15.

Buy tickets before you travel where you can. Advance single fares on Scottish routes are much cheaper than walk-up tickets bought at the station on the day, and a railcard cuts the price further. For coach travel, Perth's bus station is central and Citylink and Megabus serve Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and the Highlands; coaches are usually the cheapest option but slower than the train.

If your flight lands at Perth Airport and your final destination is another Scottish city, the fastest door-to-door plan is normally taxi to Perth station, then train — not a taxi all the way.

Budget £15–25 for a taxi into the centre, or £8–15 for the shorter hop to Perth station plus your onward ticket. A family or group of four will usually find a pre-booked transfer cheaper than four separate rail-plus-taxi combinations only if they are staying in Perth itself; for onward travel, the train still wins.

Car hire is the other common choice, because Perth is a natural base for the Highlands, Angus and Fife. Rates run about £40–90 per day plus fuel at roughly £1.40–1.50 a litre, and automatic cars cost more than manual. Collect in the city rather than at the airfield unless your rental company specifically serves it.

Perth Airport is quiet, so do not rely on finding a taxi waiting outside at an awkward hour. Book a car in advance for evening, Sunday and winter arrivals, and keep the driver's number saved offline.

If you are connecting to a train, leave a buffer. Scottish services are generally reliable but a delay on a tight connection means an hour's wait at Perth station, which is comfortable but not somewhere you want to spend a whole evening. Station facilities are limited in the evening; buy food and water in the city centre first.
