Penafiel

Give Penafiel one full day from Porto by train (about 40 min): Romanesque churches and a dolmen, not a night unless you want the São Vicente spa.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Portugal ↗Portugal is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Portugal ↗Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains assign seats: book Lisbon–Porto ahead in summer and on holiday weekends.
  • Portugal ↗Many motorways, including the Algarve's A22, use electronic tolls only: ask the hire company for a transponder before you drive off.

Penafiel is a small city on the Douro line, 40 minutes from Porto, with a cluster of Romanesque churches and a Neolithic dolmen that are national monuments. Sights sit in separate villages, so a car or a taxi day is the practical way to see more than the centre. Most travellers pass through; spa guests and church-hunters stay one night.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Trains on the Linha do Douro stop at Penafiel station (Novelas, about 1.5 km from the centre) with connections from Porto, Marco de Canaveses and further up the valley. Buses (Valpi) and long-distance coaches also serve the town. For the churches, the dolmen and Entre-os-Rios, a car or taxi is the realistic option: the monuments are in villages 5–15 km apart with thin bus service.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h

Douro-line train from Penafiel station to Porto Campanhã or São Bento

Frequent trains; base in Porto and come out here rather than the reverse.

Door to door: About 40 min by car, 30–40 min by train

Train up the Douro line, or A4 by car

Riverside town with the São Gonçalo church and bridge; pairs well with Penafiel in one day by car.

Arouca

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car via the A32 and N326

516 Arouca suspension bridge and the Paiva walkways; timed tickets, book ahead.

Vila Nova de Gaia

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train to Porto, then cross the Douro, or drive the A4/A1

Port cellars and the Gaia riverside; better as a Porto day than from Penafiel.

Vila do Conde

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Car via the A7 and A28

Coastal town with an aqueduct and a monastery; a long haul without a car.

Espinho

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train to Porto, then the Aveiro line south

Beach and fish market; only worth it on a warm day.

Póvoa de Varzim

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Car via the A7 and A28

Beach resort; skip unless you are already on the coast.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Penafiel centre

Around Largo Padre Américo and the museum; walkable, cafés and the Tuesday market, 10–15 min walk from the station.

Termas de São Vicente

Spa village 8 km south; the Palace Hotel & Spa is the reason to sleep here, not the town.

Entre-os-Rios

Where the Tâmega meets the Douro; riverside hotels and the São Miguel church, 15 km west.

Watch out

Safety

Penafiel is a quiet inland town and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are rural roads at night, unlit church lanes, and leaving bags visible in a parked car at trailheads and monuments.
  • Churches are working parishes: Mass times close them to visitors, and several keep irregular hours — check locally before travelling out.
  • Village churches and the dolmen have no ticket office and no staff; go in daylight and leave nothing in the car.
  • The station is outside the centre; allow 15–20 min to walk in or take a taxi.
  • Magikland is seasonal (mid-June to mid-September) and closes earlier in June and September.
