Voyageurs National Park
Go only if you will get on the water: this park is lakes and islands, not a drive-through. Base at Rainy Lake or Kabetogama, rent a boat or join a ranger cruise, and keep 2–3 days. In winter, go for the ice road and snowmobiling, not the trails.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Voyageurs is a water park: four big lakes — Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan and Sand Point — with 500-plus islands and no road to most of them. The voyageurs were the French-Canadian canoe crews of the fur trade, and the park is named for the route they paddled along what is now the US–Canada border. The three visitor centres are drive-up, but the Kabetogama Peninsula interior is boat-only. Kettle Falls Hotel, the only lodging inside the park, is reached by boat or the winter ice road. Come for paddling, ranger cruises and quiet water; the hiking is short and secondary.

Why go
- Four big lakes — Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan and Sand Point — with 500-plus islands and no road to most of them.
- You can paddle or motor for a day and see almost nobody; the crowds of better-known parks are absent here.
- Kettle Falls Hotel, reachable only by boat or the winter ice road, is a genuine 1910s stop with a bar and dining room.
- Dark skies and quiet water make it one of the better places in the lower 48 to see the northern lights.

Park rules
- No entrance fee, but permits for camping
- Backcountry campsites need a free permit; check current rules at a visitor centre.
- Food storage
- Use bear-resistant storage or hang food at campsites; black bears are active in summer.
- Drones
- Not allowed to launch or land in the park without permission.
- Fires
- Only in provided rings; check for fire restrictions before you light anything.
- Boating and safety gear
- Life jackets required for children; cold lake water means wearing one is sensible for everyone.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The three visitor centres are drive-up and have accessible exhibits, restrooms and parking.
- The park's main sights are on water; accessible boat tours and adapted boats are limited — ask the park what is running.
- Short trails near the visitor centres are the most manageable option for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Pack out all rubbish; there is no roadside bin network on the lakes.
- Keep wakes low near shorelines and nesting birds.
- Buy fuel, food and permits locally in International Falls, Kabetogama or Ash River so the gateway towns benefit.
- Follow catch limits and leave no fishing line or bait behind.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Voyageurs National Park?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee at Voyageurs, and boat launches are free. You pay for what you use: boat rental or a ranger cruise (roughly US$25–60 per person), fuel, and lodging. Camping is free but needs a permit.
What are the best hikes in Voyageurs National Park?
This is a water park, so hiking is short and secondary. The realistic options are the short forest trails near the Rainy Lake and Ash River visitor centres, the portage trails on the Kabetogama Peninsula reached by boat, and the walk around Ellsworth Rock Gardens. There is no long day-hike network like a mountain park.
When is the best time to visit Voyageurs National Park?
June to September for boating, paddling and the ranger cruises, with July and August warmest and busiest. September is quieter with good light. Winter (January–March) is for ice fishing and snowmobiling if the ice roads are open. Avoid April and November, when the lakes are thawing or freezing and water access is unreliable.
Do I need a boat to see the park?
For most of it, yes. The visitor centres are drive-up, but the Kabetogama Peninsula and the islands have no roads. Options are renting a boat, joining a ranger-led or operator cruise, or canoeing. Kettle Falls Hotel is reached by boat or, in winter, the ice road.
Can I visit Voyageurs without a car?
It is difficult. There is no public transport to the visitor centres; you need a car from International Falls or Duluth. Once there, you still need a boat for the park itself. Flying into International Falls and renting a car is the usual approach.
Is Voyageurs National Park crowded?
No. It is one of the least-visited national parks in the lower 48, and most visitors are on the water. Even in July you can find an empty bay. The busiest points are the boat launches and the ranger cruises, which book out — reserve those ahead.
