  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
  • Upper Peninsula ↗A car is required. Cell coverage is patchy in the interior; AT&T and Verizon are the most reliable.
  • Upper Peninsula ↗Winter driving is the main hazard: lake-effect snow, subzero temperatures and long gaps between open gas stations. Carry a blanket, food, water and a shovel.

Pictured Rocks is a 67 km strip of Lake Superior shoreline between Munising and Grand Marais: sandstone cliffs stained by minerals, waterfalls dropping straight into the lake, and the Grand Sable Dunes at the east end. There is no entrance gate and no entrance fee; you pay for parking at the busiest trailheads and for the boat or kayak that gets you under the cliffs. Most visitors see it in one day from Munising; two days lets you add the Au Sable Light Station and the dunes.

Falls from cliffs high

Keep back from the edge, especially at Miners Castle and Grand Portal; wet sandstone is slick.

Cold water high

Lake Superior stays cold even in August; swim near shore and never kayak alone.

Storms arrive fast; carry a shell and turn back if the lake builds.

Long trails with no water medium

Carry 2 L per person on the Chapel Loop; there is no potable water on the trail.

computed for this spot

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • Miners Castle overlook and Munising Falls have paved paths suitable for wheelchairs.
  • The Chapel Loop and most backcountry trails are rough and not suitable for limited mobility.
  • Boat tours from Munising are the easiest accessible way to see the cliffs.

Visiting lightly

  • Pack out all rubbish; there are few bins on the trails.
  • Use the parking fee lots and shuttle where offered instead of parking on the shoulder.
  • Keep to the trail on the dunes; sand blows out and takes years to recover.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore?

Nothing. There is no entrance gate and no entrance fee. You pay only for parking at the busiest trailheads in season (about US$15–30 per vehicle, 2026 estimate), for camping, and for boat or kayak tours from Munising.

What are the best hikes in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore?

The Chapel Loop (about 16 km, 5–6 hours) is the best full day: two waterfalls, Chapel Rock and cliff-top beach. For something shorter, Miners Castle and Miners Falls take 1.5–2 hours, and the Au Sable Light Station walk is 2.5 km each way.

When is the best time to visit Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore?
