The UP is one road trip, not a city break: 500 km of two-lane highway between the Wisconsin line and Sault Ste. Marie, with towns 60–120 km apart. Pick two bases — Marquette for food and services, Munising for Pictured Rocks — and treat the rest as driving days. You need your own vehicle; there is no useful train or bus network.

  • Driving Marquette to Sault Ste. Marie is about 4 hours on two-lane road; do not plan it as a morning.
  • Watch for deer and moose on M-28, especially at dusk.
  • Give logging, salt and sand trucks a wide berth; they are fast and have large blind spots.
  • Do not hunt or camp on private land without permission; 'No Trespassing' signs are enforced.

Lake Superior shore
Lake-effect snow from November to March, often measured in feet; summer days are mild and the lake stays cold. Fall colour peaks in late September and early October.
Inland and south
Slightly warmer and less snowy than the Superior shore; spring mud season closes some dirt roads.

July and August are the only reliably warm months; winter is a snowmobile and ski season, not a sightseeing one.
