  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.

Paricutin is the youngest volcano on earth: in February 1943 a farmer's field near the Purépecha village of San Juan Parangaricutiro split open and a cinder cone grew out of it over roughly nine years, burying two villages under lava and ash. The church of San Juan Parangaricutiro still stands half clear of the rock, and the cone, about 424 m above the surrounding land, can be climbed to the crater rim. It is not a national park: the land is communal, run by the villages of Angahuan and the resettled San Juan Nuevo, and access is on foot or by horse with a local guide. There is no ticket office, no road to the church and no water after the village, so the practical questions are how far you walk, whether you ride, and how early you start.

Why go

  • The youngest volcano on earth: it appeared in a farmer's field in 1943 and grew for about nine years.
  • The half-buried church of San Juan Parangaricutiro stands in the lava field, reachable only on foot or by horse.
  • You can climb the cone and look into the crater, with the lava field and the buried village below.
  • Villagers in Angahuan run the guiding, horses and food, so the money stays local.

Afternoon rain in Jun–Sep medium

Go early and be off the cone by midday in the wet season.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The walk to the buried church is rough lava rock; horses from Angahuan are the practical option for limited mobility.
  • The cone climb is steep and loose; not suitable for wheelchairs or anyone unsteady on their feet.

Visiting lightly

  • Hire guides and horses in Angahuan so the community that lost its land benefits from visitors.
  • Take all rubbish back to the village; the lava field has no collection.
  • Stay on the worn paths to keep the cinder slopes from eroding further.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Paricutin?

There is no national park ticket. You pay the community in Angahuan: a guide and entry fee of roughly MXN 200–500 per person, or MXN 400–800 for a horse to the buried church and back (2026 estimate). Agree the price before you start.

What are the best hikes in Paricutin?

Two: the walk across the lava field to the half-buried church of San Juan Parangaricutiro, about 3–4 hours return, and the climb to the crater, 5–7 hours return on loose cinders. The church walk suits most people; the cone needs a guide and a full day.

When is the best time to visit Paricutin?

November to March: dry, clear and mild, with cold mornings. April and May are hot and dusty. June to September brings afternoon rain and cloud on the cone; July and August are the wettest.

Can I climb Paricutin without a guide?

It is possible but not sensible. The routes are only partly marked and the lava field all looks the same. Guides in Angahuan know the lines and the price is low.

How do I get to Paricutin?

Fly or drive to Uruapan, then take MEX 37 for 37 km to Angahuan, about 45 minutes. From Angahuan you walk or ride to the lava field; there is no road to the church.

Is there anywhere to stay near Paricutin?

Yes, in Angahuan: small hotels and rustic cabins with fireplaces and campsites, some with direct trail access. Uruapan, 45 minutes away, has the widest choice.
