Lady Elliot is the southernmost inhabited cay on the Great Barrier Reef, a flat coral island a few metres above high tide with a grass airstrip down its middle and one eco-resort under lease. It sits inside Capricornia Cays National Park, so the reef, fish, turtles and birds are protected and nothing may be taken. There are no hills and no real hikes: two sand tracks cross the island, and the best walking is the beach circuit, about 30 minutes at any tide. The draw is underwater — snorkelling between Coral Gardens and the lighthouse, turtles year-round, manta rays, and a wreck outside the second reef. Access is by air only, which keeps numbers low and makes the island feel empty compared with Cairns or the Whitsundays.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The island is flat, but the walking tracks are soft sand and unpaved, which is difficult for wheelchairs and limited mobility.
- Staff buggies run on the island but are not hired out; a lift is occasionally possible.
Visiting lightly
- The island is revegetated after its guano-mining past; stay on tracks and don't trample plants or bird burrows.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on coral.
- The resort desalinates its own water and runs solar panels by the runway; keep showers short.
- Don't book anything that promises touching or feeding wildlife beyond the resort's fish pool.

How much does it cost to enter Lady Elliot Island?
There is no walk-up gate fee — access is by the operator's flights, so the cost is the fare. What are the best hikes in Lady Elliot Island?
There are no real hikes. The island is a flat coral cay with two short sand tracks and a beach circuit of about 30 minutes that works at any tide. The best 'walk' is the snorkel drift between Coral Gardens and the lighthouse, entering at one end and exiting at the other.
When is the best time to visit Lady Elliot Island?
April to September for dry, clear weather and the best snorkelling; June to September also brings passing humpback whales. November to March is hotter and wetter but is turtle nesting and hatching season. Water stays warm enough to swim well into April.
Can you visit Lady Elliot Island without flying?
No commercial ferries run and there is no wharf. Private boats can use the moorings off the island but must pay the relevant fees and cannot use resort facilities. Flying your own plane is not allowed.
Is a day trip to Lady Elliot Island worth it?
A day trip gives you roughly four hours on the island, enough for a snorkel, a glass-bottom boat trip and the beach circuit. You cannot dive on the day you fly in or out, so stay at least one night if diving or turtle nesting is the point of the trip.
Is there mobile phone reception on Lady Elliot Island?
No. There is no cell coverage. A satellite phone in the departure lounge takes a Telstra phonecard, sold at the island shop, and there is an internet terminal at reception for a small fee.
