Karangsambung-Karangbolong is a national geopark in Kebumen Regency, Central Java, and the only one in the province. It runs from the Karangsambung hills in the north, where rocks hundreds of millions of years old sit in the rice fields, down to the Indian Ocean coast at Ayah and Buayan, where limestone headlands hold caves and the beaches carry heavy surf. It was named a National Geopark in November 2018. There is no single gate, no single ticket and no shuttle: it is a spread-out area of villages, and you move between sites by car or motorbike. Treat it as two clusters, north and south, and give each one a day.

How much does it cost to enter Karangsambung-Karangbolong?
There is no single entrance fee, because the geopark is a whole district rather than a fenced park. You pay per site: about Rp3,000 at Karangbolong Beach, Rp4,000 at Logending, Rp10,000 at Lampon, and Rp7,500 at Petruk Cave, with reduced child rates. The Karangsambung rock sites are mostly free or ask a small local fee. All figures are 2026 estimates.
What are the best hikes in Karangsambung-Karangbolong?
There are no long marked trails. The best walking is the short paths at the Karangsambung sites — Watu Kelir and the Pentulu Indah viewpoint above the rice fields — plus the Lampon beach-and-cave routes and the community trails at Sawangan. Petruk Cave is a two-hour underground walk rather than a hike.
When is the best time to visit Karangsambung-Karangbolong?
May, June, July and September are the driest and clearest months for both the hills and the coast. April and October are workable. Avoid December to March, when rain makes the tracks muddy and the Indian Ocean surf is at its heaviest.
Do I need a guide?
Only for Petruk Cave, where a guide is required and there is no lighting. Other sites are open access; hiring a local guide at Sawangan or in the Karangsambung villages is optional but useful.
Can I swim at the beaches?
No. Karangbolong, Suwuk, Logending and Menganti face the open Indian Ocean with strong waves and no lifeguards. Wade at the edge only, and keep children within arm's reach.
How do I get there without a car?
Take a train to Gombong or Kebumen, then a minibus towards Ayah or Karangbolong for the coast, or rent a car or motorbike in town for the Karangsambung sites. Rental cars are limited, so book before you arrive.
How long do I need?
Two days is right: one for the Ayah coast and caves, one for the Karangsambung hills. One day is possible if you pick either the coast or the north, not both.
