Gulf Islands National Park Reserve protects about 36 km² of islands, islets and reef in the Southern Gulf Islands between Vancouver Island and the mainland. It was established in 2003 and is a national park reserve, which means the land is subject to continuing Indigenous title and is co-managed with First Nations. There is no interpretive centre. Most of the reserve is reachable only by boat or kayak; the two drive-in campgrounds and the Sidney Spit walk-in sites are the practical entry points for a visitor without a boat.

- Sidney Spit is a sand spit and lagoon reachable by a 25-minute summer passenger ferry from Sidney, with no car needed.
- Ten backcountry camping areas on eight islands, plus two drive-in campgrounds, make it a cheap base for island hopping.
- Orcas, porpoises, seals and river otters use the surrounding waters; eagles and turkey vultures work the shorelines.
- The islets are closed to landing for most visitors, which keeps the seal haul-outs and seabird nesting sites intact.

How much does it cost to enter Gulf Islands National Park Reserve?
There is no day-use entry fee. You pay for transport and camping: frontcountry camping was $19.75 per party per vehicle per night in 2024 (extra vehicle $7.75), backcountry camping $13.50 per person per night, and the Sidney Spit passenger ferry was about $29 adult return in 2017 (check 2026 rates).
What are the best hikes in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve?
The reserve is mostly water and islets, so walks are short. The Sidney Spit walk is flat sand and gravel from the ferry landing. Narvaez Bay on Saturna is about a 1.7 km walk-in to the campsites. On Pender Island, Prior Centennial is a drive-in base for short walks to viewpoints.
When is the best time to visit Gulf Islands National Park Reserve?
May, June and September: dry, mild and quieter than July and August. Sidney Spit walk-in camping runs 15 May–30 Sep and the summer passenger ferry runs late June–early September. Winter is open but wet, and some areas have access restrictions.
Do I need a boat to visit?
For most of the reserve, yes. Mayne, Saturna and Pender Islands have vehicle ferries and road access to some park land, and Sidney Spit has a summer passenger ferry. The islets and the rest of the protected waters are kayak or boat access only.
