  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
  • Rocky Mountains ↗Trailheads sit above 2,400 m; give the first day to the altitude, not to a summit.
  • Rocky Mountains ↗I-70 west of Denver and other high passes close for snow and for avalanche control; check the state road site the morning you drive.

For some areas

Four Corners is the only spot in the United States where the boundaries of four states meet: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. The marker sits on the Navajo Nation, is managed as a Navajo Tribal Park, and is a waypoint on the Trails of the Ancients National Scenic Byway. There is one thing to do here — stand in four states at once — plus a ring of vendor stalls, a small visitor centre and a short trail. It is far from any airport and there is no running water, electricity or phone signal on site, so it works only as a leg of a longer drive through the Four Corners region.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Four Corners?

The Navajo Nation charges per person and per vehicle at the gate — roughly US$5 per person and about US$20 per car in 2026 (check). It is not a US national park, so America the Beautiful passes do not work here.

What are the best hikes in Four Corners?

There is only one short walk at the monument itself, the Dancing Horse Trail, which takes 30–60 minutes on flat, exposed ground. The real hiking is elsewhere in the region: Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly and Hovenweep are all within a few hours' drive.

When is the best time to visit Four Corners?

April, May, September and October give warm days, cool nights and thinner crowds. June to August is hot, with temperatures above 35 °C and monsoon storms; December to February is cold and many vendor stalls stay closed.

How long do you need at Four Corners?

Most visits last 10 minutes to 2 hours. Plan 30–60 minutes for the photo, a walk around the stalls and something to eat, then continue to your next stop.

Is Four Corners the same as the Four Corners region?

No. The monument is one small site on the Navajo Nation. The 'Four Corners region' covers a much larger area of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, including Mesa Verde, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon.

Can I camp or sleep at Four Corners?

No. Camping is not allowed at the monument and there are no hotels on site. Sleep in Farmington, Cortez, Blanding or Bluff.

Is there food and water at Four Corners?

Food stalls sell fry bread, Navajo burgers and tacos in season, plus cold drinks. There is no running water on site, so bring your own.
