- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Brazil ↗US, Canadian and Australian citizens need an e-visa (about US$81 — check) applied for online at the official VFS portal before travel; EU and UK citizens do not. Check your passport with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking.
- Brazil ↗Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for many areas, including the Amazon and Pantanal; check with a travel clinic at least 10 days before travel.
- Brazil ↗Keep your phone out of sight in the street and on beaches; phone theft is the most common crime against visitors in big cities.
- Brazil ↗Carnival 2027 runs about 5–10 February (Tuesday 9 February; Salvador from 4 February): book Rio, Salvador and Recife/Olinda months ahead or avoid those dates.

Amazônia National Park protects a vast tract of rainforest along the Tapajós River in western Pará. It was Brazil's first Amazon national park, created in 1974 after the Trans-Amazonian Highway opened. Visitor infrastructure is minimal: two basic bases (Tracoá and Uruá), a short interpretive trail, a river viewpoint and a handful of other trails. Most travellers visit as a day trip from Itaituba, driving 65 km south on the BR‑230. Entry is free but requires a permit from ICMBio. The park is best in the dry months August–December, when the road is passable and seasonal sandbars appear along the river.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Tracoá base reachable by vehicle; short easy trail.
- Uruá viewpoint reachable by road but steep sections may be challenging for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Carry out all waste; no littering.
- Hire local guides registered with ICMBio.
- Avoid buying wildlife products or souvenirs made from forest resources.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Amazônia National Park?
Entry is free, but you must obtain a permit from the ICMBio office in Itaituba (passport, photos required).
What are the best hikes in Amazônia National Park?
The short Tracoá interpretive trail (≈2 km) is easy and always open; the Uruá viewpoint walk is also easy. Longer backcountry treks need a permit and guide.

A guide is mandatory for any backcountry hike beyond the base areas and for river boat trips on the Tapajós.
Are there accommodations inside the park?
Two basic cabins exist at the Uruá base; they must be booked in advance with ICMBio and may have a fee. Most visitors stay in Itaituba.
