Papeete

Papeete is a morning-and-evening town: do the market and the cathedral early, rest indoors at midday, eat at the food trucks after 18:00 — and keep the ferry to Moorea for the next morning.

Papeete is the only real town on Tahiti and a base for a night or two, not a week. Everything a first visit needs is inside one square kilometre on the harbour, and most long-haul flights land at night, so the first bed matters more than the sights. Four small clusters cover it; Moorea, the lagoon and the other islands are the reason you came.

PPT to the waterfront: one pre-booked hotel transfer or airport taxi, 15–30 minutes — the risk is a night landing with no ride arranged, not the distance.

Walk inside a cluster; a taxi between clusters and after dark.

Passes
No pass. Taxi fares are set by zone and rise at night: ask the fare before you go.
Late at night
No rail. Le Truck buses thin out in the evening and are not a plan for a late arrival: book a taxi or the hotel transfer.

Quieter and greener, a taxi ride from the market and the ferry; good if you want a garden and lagoon view.
Waterfront
First and last night: the quay, the food trucks and the Moorea ferry are a short walk; choose a hotel with a 24-hour desk and a car door.

Language

French is the language of government, shops and signs; Tahitian (reo Tahiti) is spoken at home and in church by many, and other Polynesian languages survive in the Marquesas, Tuamotu and Australs. English is good in resorts and dive centres, patchy in pensions and shops.

  • Māuruuru (thank you) and nana (goodbye) are always welcome.
  • Bring a French phrasebook or offline translator for pensions and outer islands.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Bonjour or ia ora na; a kiss on the cheek among acquaintances; avoid: Starting a request without a greeting
  • Flowers: Accept the flower garland (hei) on arrival; flower behind the right ear means single, left means taken; avoid: Throwing a hei away in front of the giver
  • Homes: Shoes off at the door; avoid: Entering yards without asking
  • Church: Neat clothes, quiet photos only when allowed; avoid: Beachwear
  • Pace: Patience; 'aita pe'ape'a' (no worries); avoid: Pushing for speed

Red lines

  • Ask before photographing people, especially at church.
  • Cover shoulders and knees in churches.
  • Topless bathing is not accepted in town.

Scams (French Polynesia page)

  • Overpriced resort transfers: Compare the resort boat with the public shuttle to Vaitape; ask the price before boarding.
  • Pearl 'grades' at inflated prices: Buy from farms or shops that give a certificate and state grade (A–D), size and lustre; compare several shops.
  • Fake ETIS or visa sites: Use the official etis.pf and france-visas.gouv.fr sites; any paid 'service' is not official.
  • Unlicensed tour boats: Use operators with insurance and a licence; ask about life jackets and ray and shark feeding rules.
