Where to stay in Panama: best areas and types of hotel

Base yourself in Casco Viejo if this is your first trip and you want to walk to dinner, bars and the waterfront. Choose El Cangrejo, Obarrio or Bella Vista if you want a lower rate, a quieter street and quick metro access. Then split the trip: 3 nights Panama City, 3–4 nights Bocas del Toro or 3 nights Boquete, and 2–3 nights in San Blas if you want islands.

Casco Viejo is the old quarter: plazas, churches, rooftop bars and boutique hotels in restored buildings. Streets are narrow and some blocks are quiet at night, so check the exact address. Rates here are the highest in the city, and parking is difficult — you do not need a car.

El Cangrejo and Obarrio sit north of the centre: apartment towers, cafés, supermarkets and the metro. Bella Vista and Punta Paitilla are closer to the water and the Cinta Costera. These areas suit stays of a week or more and travellers who want a kitchen.

Near the Canal, Gamboa and the Miraflores area put you close to the locks, the rainforest and the Pan-American Highway. One or two nights is enough; you still need a taxi or bus into the city.

Outside the capital, Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean side is a group of islands with guesthouses, hostels and small hotels, reached by boat from Almirante. Boquete in Chiriquí is cooler, greener and built around coffee and hiking. San Blas (Guna Yala) stays are simple cabañas on islands, usually with meals and boat transport included in the price — book through a Guna-run operator.

Panama covers the full range. Hostels with dorm beds cluster in Casco Viejo, Bocas del Toro and Boquete. Mid-range hotels and apart-hotels are strongest in El Cangrejo, Obarrio and Bella Vista. Boutique and design hotels sit in Casco Viejo. International chains and resorts are in Costa del Este, Punta Paitilla and along the Pacific beaches.

San Blas is its own category: island cabañas run by Guna families, usually sold as a package with boat transfers and meals. Standards are basic and power may be limited. On the Pacific coast, all-inclusive resorts near Farallón and Playa Blanca suit families; they are far from the city and best reached by car or shuttle.

High season runs December to April, the dry season on the Pacific side. Carnival and Easter week fill the country, and Bocas del Toro also draws crowds in September and October. For December to April, book two to three months ahead; for San Blas and Bocas over holidays, three to six months is safer. May to November is the green season: lower rates, afternoon rain, and some island operators reduce sailings.

Cancellation terms matter more here than in Europe: island and San Blas bookings often need full prepayment and do not refund for weather. Pay by card in the city; carry cash for San Blas, small Bocas guesthouses and rural Boquete.

Panama City traffic is heavy, so pick an area you can walk or reach by metro rather than one that looks close on a map. Plugs are types A and B at 120 V, the same as the US. Tap water is generally treated in the capital but many travellers drink bottled or filtered water elsewhere — check locally.

For safety, treat Casco Viejo and the city like any large capital: use registered taxis or ride apps at night, and avoid walking in unfamiliar blocks after dark. Outside the city, distances are long; a domestic flight to David or Bocas saves a full day compared with the bus.
