Cash, cards and currency
Panama uses the balboa (PAB), fixed one to one with the US dollar. There are no balboa banknotes: US dollar notes are what you spend, alongside Panamanian coins for small change. That makes budgeting simple, but it also means you should arrive with US dollars rather than changing money.
Cards are accepted widely in Panama City hotels, restaurants and supermarkets. Bocas del Toro and Boquete are patchier, and San Blas runs on cash. Carry small bills: US$50 and US$100 notes are often refused by taxis, fondas and small shops. Guna Yala has no ATMs, so bring enough cash for the regional fee, island fees, drinks and tips before you leave Panama City.

How to cut costs
Eat where locals eat. The plato del día at a fonda is the single best value in the country, and Panama City's markets and neighbourhood comedores do the same food for a third of Casco Viejo prices. Breakfast from a supermarket and one restaurant meal a day keeps a mid-range budget near the bottom of its band.
Travel by bus where the route exists. Long-distance buses and the Panama City metro are cheap; domestic flights to Bocas del Toro are the convenience option at around US$120 one way. Book tours locally rather than as packages where you can, and check hotel rates for the green season (roughly May to November) against the dry season before you commit — check.
