Trains in Panama: tickets, passes and routes

Panama is not a train country. There is no national passenger rail service linking Panama City with David, Boquete, Bocas del Toro or anywhere else, and no rail pass to buy. The only train most visitors ride is the Panama Canal Railway between Panama City and Colón, a commuter line that runs alongside the Canal and Gatun Lake.

Treat it as a half-day experience rather than a transport solution: ride out in the morning, spend a few hours in Colón or arrange a transfer back, and keep your regional travel on buses or short flights. If your plan depends on trains, Panama will not deliver it.

The Panama Canal Railway is a single-track line of about 47.6 km running parallel to the Canal from the Pacific side to Colón on the Atlantic. It was built for freight and rebuilt for container traffic, with passenger carriages attached to the same corridor. The ride takes roughly an hour and passes Gatun Lake and stretches of rainforest, which is why people take it at all.

Departures are limited. The published pattern is one train each way on weekday mornings, with an afternoon return, and no service at weekends or on public holidays — confirm the current timetable before you build a day around it, because freight priority can change things. Seats are in a small number of carriages, so the train can fill on holiday weeks.

Panama City boarding is at Corozal, near the Pacific end of the Canal, not at a downtown station; you need a taxi or app ride to reach it. Colón station sits near the port area, which is not a place to wander after dark. Many travellers take the train one way and return by road, or join it as part of a Canal tour.

For everything else, the country runs on buses and planes. Long-distance buses leave from Albrook terminal in Panama City — David is 6–7 hours, then Almirante for Bocas del Toro. Air Panama flies from Albrook (PAC) to Bocas del Toro and David in about an hour for US$80–160 one way. Neither has a rail equivalent.

What exists, what it costs and what to use instead.

Book the Canal Railway a few days ahead rather than months; seats are limited but demand is steady, not frantic. Weekday mornings give the best light on Gatun Lake.

Do not plan a same-day connection from the train to a domestic flight at Albrook or Tocumen — the timings are tight and the stations are far apart. Give yourself a night in Panama City on either side.

If your goal is the Canal rather than the train, the Miraflores Locks visitor centre is open daily, roughly 08:00–17:00, with ship transits best mid-morning and mid-afternoon (check).

Carry cash for taxis and small purchases around both stations, and keep valuables out of sight in Colón.
