Oxford is the oldest university city in the English-speaking world, 80 km west of London, and the whole historic centre fits inside a 20-minute walk. The university has no campus: about 40 separate colleges, several museums and the Bodleian sit among ordinary streets, and many colleges close or shorten hours in term time. Plan one full day for the centre and one night if you want an evening without the last train.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; buses cover the rest. Oxford Bus Company and Stagecoach run the city network, with smartcard or contactless fares. Driving in the centre is restricted and parking is scarce: use a park and ride on the ring road and take the bus in. Trains from Oxford station reach London Paddington in about an hour.
