Ottawa in October: what to expect

Ottawa sits in the Ontario and Great Lakes climate zone, where October is one of the two best months of the year — warm enough for long walks, cool enough to want a jacket by mid-afternoon. The month starts mild and ends close to winter: daytime highs near 13 °C in the first week fall to about 8 °C in the last, and overnight lows drop from about 6 °C to around 1 °C. Frost is possible late in the month.

Rain arrives on roughly 11 to 13 days, usually as short showers rather than all-day rain, and the city gets about four hours of sunshine a day on average. Daylight shrinks fast: about 11 hours on 1 October, about 10 hours by 31 October, with sunset before 6pm at month's end. Wind off the Ottawa River makes the waterfront and Parliament Hill feel colder than the thermometer suggests.

The first snow flurries of the season sometimes appear in the final days of October, but lasting snow rarely arrives before November. Check the forecast before you commit to a day trip outside the city.

October is a medium month for both crowds and prices in Ottawa. Summer tour buses are gone, Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market are comfortable to walk, and museum queues are short on weekdays. The exception is Thanksgiving, the second Monday of October: a three-day weekend when Canadians travel, hotels fill and rates jump.

After Thanksgiving, hotel prices fall through the middle of the month, then climb again for the last weekend, when Halloween events and university family weekends bring people into town. Book early for both windows; midweek stays in the middle two weeks are the cheapest of the month.

Restaurant prices don't move much by season. Expect to pay more for anything on the Québec side of the river only if you cross for a specific meal — the currency is the same.

Thanksgiving falls on the second Monday of October and is a statutory holiday across Canada, so federal sites and some businesses run holiday hours. It is the anchor of the month's travel calendar.

Halloween on 31 October is widely celebrated; in Ottawa the ByWard Market and suburban neighbourhoods decorate heavily, and ticketed haunted-house and pumpkin events run through the last two weekends. Fall fairs and harvest markets continue in the Ottawa Valley and rural areas around the city through early October.

The Canadian Museum of History across the river in Gatineau and the national museums in Ottawa run autumn exhibition programmes; check each museum's site for dates and ticketed entry. The Rideau Canal skateway does not open until winter — in October the canal is water, not ice.

Foliage is the reason to come. Gatineau Park, just across the river in Québec, has the best concentration of maple colour near the city, with trails and lookouts reachable by car or shuttle; the park's busiest weekends are Thanksgiving and the one after. The Rideau Canal towpath and the paths along the Ottawa River give you colour without leaving downtown.

In the city, Parliament Hill, the ByWard Market, the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of History are all comfortable in October weather and mostly indoors if it rains. The Canadian Museum of Nature and the Canada Science and Technology Museum are good wet-day backups.

For a longer day out, the Ottawa Valley and the towns east and west of the city have small-town main streets and conservation areas with trails. Algonquin Park, about three hours away, is at its colour peak in late September and early October — worth an overnight rather than a day trip.

Pack for two seasons in one month. A light insulated jacket or a warm mid-layer plus a waterproof shell covers almost every October day; add a hat and gloves for evenings after the 20th. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else — Ottawa's sights are spread out and you will be on your feet.

Bring a compact umbrella or a hooded rain shell; showers are frequent but short. A small daypack for layers as the afternoon cools is useful. If you plan to hike in Gatineau Park, add shoes with grip — trails can be muddy and leaf-covered.

September is warmer and greener, with the colour just starting late in the month and similar crowd levels. November is the shoulder: cold, grey, low prices, and the start of Christmas market season. December brings Winterlude-adjacent holiday events, higher prices and real winter cold.

If your dates are flexible and foliage is the goal, aim for the first three weeks of October. If you want the cheapest hotel rates and don't mind grey skies, the middle two weeks after Thanksgiving are the value window.
