Ottawa in December: what to expect

Indoor sights carry December. The national museums — the Canadian Museum of History across the river in Gatineau, the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Nature — give you full days out of the cold, and the Parliament Hill area is worth a short walk for the lights rather than a long tour.

For snow, head to the Gatineau Hills: cross-country ski and snowshoe trails about 20–30 minutes from downtown, conditions permitting. Within the city, the Rideau Canal corridors and the paths along the Ottawa River are cleared for walking, and the ByWard Market is the easiest evening stop for food and drink.

If you want a bigger winter trip, Ottawa pairs with Montréal and Québec City by train, and both are deeper into the same cold, snowy season.

November is the grey shoulder before the snow settles: cheaper and quieter, but with less to do outdoors. January is colder and reliably brings the Rideau Canal skateway and Winterlude preparations, so it suits travellers who specifically want the full Ottawa winter. February adds Winterlude itself, the city's biggest winter event.
