Best time to visit Ottawa: weather, crowds and events by month

Ottawa, Kansas sits on the plains between Kansas City and Emporia, on the I-35 corridor. It has no beach season, no ski season and no big tourist calendar, so the decision is simple: pick the months when you can be outside comfortably, and avoid the two extremes.

Late April through May and September through October give 15–25 °C days, dry air and low motel rates. Late June to August is hot and humid, with heat index values that make walking the downtown blocks unpleasant by midday. December to February is genuinely cold, with sub-freezing nights and occasional ice, but it is also the cheapest and quietest time if you are only passing through.

If your trip is tied to a specific event — a university graduation, a county fair or a family visit — book that date first and treat the weather as a secondary concern. Nothing in Ottawa is worth rearranging a trip around on climate alone.

January and February are the coldest months. Daytime highs hover near freezing to 8 °C, nights drop well below 0 °C, and a north wind makes the downtown blocks feel colder than the number suggests. Snow is light compared with the northern states, but ice on side roads is the real hazard. This is the cheapest time to stay, and the only time you should plan a trip that is mostly indoors.

March is a transition month: warm days appear, then a cold snap returns. Wind is constant. April brings the first real storms, and this is the start of tornado season on the Kansas plains, which runs through June. That does not mean you should avoid April — it means you should check the forecast each morning and know where you would shelter.

May is one of the two best months. Days sit around 20–25 °C, evenings are cool, and the countryside is green before summer heat burns it off. Rain comes as short afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day drizzle. Late April through May is the window to aim for if you want to be outside.

June turns hot quickly, and by late June humidity arrives with it. July and August are the peak: highs commonly 32–35 °C, humid, with heat index values higher. Mornings before about 10am and evenings after 7pm are the only comfortable outdoor hours. If you visit in summer, build the day around air-conditioned stops and treat the middle of the day as downtime.

September is the other best month. The heat breaks, the air dries out, and days settle into the mid-20s. October is similar but cooler and can bring the first frost late in the month. Both months are excellent for driving, and both are still cheap.

November is quiet and increasingly cold, with the first hard freeze likely. December brings holiday travel pressure on flights into Kansas City, but Ottawa itself stays calm. If you are flying in, book December flights early; if you are driving, December is fine.

Ottawa is a small town on a highway corridor, so lodging is motel-style rather than resort-style, and rates move less than in a big city. Expect roughly $55–90 per night in winter and $80–120 in summer for a mid-range room near the interstate. These are 2026 estimates; check current rates before booking.

Food and fuel are the main other costs. There is no admission-heavy attraction in town, so a day here is cheap once you have a room. If you are combining Ottawa with a larger Kansas stop, the bigger cost is the rental car and the drive, not the stay.

The one exception is event weekends. University graduation in May and any county fair or festival weekend can fill the limited local rooms, so book those dates well ahead or stay in a nearby town and drive in.
