Ottawa sits in Franklin County, Kansas, roughly halfway between Kansas City and Topeka. Neither city's airport is inside Ottawa, so every trip starts with a road leg. The table below compares the realistic choices by cost and time.

MCI is the main gateway for the region and the usual starting point for Ottawa. Rental desks sit at the airport, and the drive is straightforward: follow the interstate south, then state highways west toward Ottawa. Allow 90 minutes in normal conditions and closer to two hours if you leave during the weekday morning or evening peak.

A car is close to essential once you are in Ottawa. The town is spread out, and attractions such as the Old Depot Museum and the Franklin County Courthouse area are easier to reach by road. Fuel is cheap by international standards, but insurance and young-driver surcharges add up; check what your fare or credit card already covers.

Ride-hailing apps work at MCI and in the Kansas City area, but drivers willing to run 100 km to Ottawa are not guaranteed, especially late at night.
