Ostróda
Give Ostróda one full day and one night: castle museum, lakeside promenade and a short Lake Drwęckie cruise. Skip the 11-hour Elbląg Canal run unless you have a spare day.
Ostróda is a compact lakeside town on the western edge of Masuria, on the Drwęca river and Lake Drwęckie, about 40 km from Olsztyn and 123–130 km from Gdańsk by the S7. The walkable core — station, castle, promenade, pier, marina, amphitheatre — fits a single day, and the town works well as an overnight stop between Warsaw, Gdańsk and Olsztyn. Most visitors come for the water, the Elbląg Canal and summer events rather than for a long sightseeing list.

The centre, castle, churches, pier, marina and promenade are walkable: station to castle about 0.7 km (10 min), station to the Lake Drwęckie promenade about 1–1.5 km (15–25 min). ZKM Ostróda city buses cover outer neighbourhoods, Lake Sajmino and shopping areas, with fewer lines at weekends. Bicycles work well along the lakefront; terrain gets hilly towards the Dylewskie Hills. Ostróda is a small, calm lakeside town and normal precautions cover it. The real risks are water (cold lake, no lifeguard outside the season), bicycles and cars on the promenade, and thin late-night transport — book a taxi rather than walk dark lakeside paths alone.
