Oslo is small for a capital: the centre, the harbour and the museums sit within a few kilometres, and a single transit ticket covers trams, buses, metro and the fjord ferries. The trips that go wrong pay for taxis, expect summer light in winter, or arrive after the last airport train without a plan. Four clusters cover a first visit: Karl Johans gate, the harbour front with the fortress, the Bjørvika waterfront with the Opera House, and Grünerløkka for cafés and food.

Money and SIM

Budget day: NOK 600–900 excl. bed
Paying: Cards and phone wallets are accepted almost everywhere, including small kiosks; some places no longer take cash.
