Top picks

Oslo is compact and the metro, tram and ferry network is dense, so almost any central district works. The choice is really about what you want outside the door: museums and restaurants, a park and playground, or a cheap bed near nightlife.

Sentrum and Aker Brygge put the Opera House, Munch Museum, National Museum and harbour within a 15-minute walk. Grünerløkka is the café-and-bar district with tram access to the centre. Majorstuen and Frogner are quieter, greener and close to Vigeland Park. Tøyen is the cheapest central option and next to the Botanical Garden.

If you are only in Oslo for two nights on a Norway trip, stay central and walk. If you are working or staying a week, Grünerløkka or Majorstuen give better value per square metre.

Map

All the districts below sit inside or just outside Ring 1, Oslo's inner ring road. Distances are short: Sentrum to Grünerløkka is about 2 km, Sentrum to Majorstuen about 3 km.

The airport express (Flytoget) and Vy trains run from Gardermoen to Oslo S in roughly 19–23 minutes. From Oslo S, most central hotels are a 5–15 minute walk or one tram stop.

Use the Ruter app or a travel card for metro, tram, bus and ferry. A single ticket covers all zones in the city for one hour (2026 estimate).

  • Sentrum / Kvadraturen — around Oslo S and Karl Johans gate
  • Aker Brygge / Tjuvholmen — waterfront west of the centre
  • Grünerløkka — east of the river Akerselva
  • Majorstuen / Frogner — west, near Vigeland Park
  • Tøyen — east, near the Botanical Garden
  • Bygdøy — peninsula with the Fram and Kon-Tiki museums

Tips

Book early for May–September and December. Oslo hotel prices rise sharply in summer and around public holidays, and the cheapest central rooms sell out weeks ahead.

Check whether your hotel is inside Ring 1 if you plan to walk everywhere. A place labelled "Oslo" can be 20 minutes out by metro, which is fine but changes your evenings.

If you are travelling solo, hostels in Grünerløkka and Tøyen are the usual starting point. Families often do better in Majorstuen or Frogner, where apartments and larger rooms are more common.

For a short trip, staying near Nationaltheatret or Oslo S saves the most time: the airport train, metro and most museum buses meet there.

  • Book 4–8 weeks ahead for summer and December
  • Confirm the nearest metro or tram stop before booking
  • Check if breakfast is included — it is expensive in Oslo cafés
  • Look for apartments in Majorstuen or Frogner for stays over 4 nights
