Getting there
Himeji sits on the Sanyō line west of Osaka, so every fast train between Osaka and Okayama or Hiroshima stops there. From Shin-Osaka, Shinkansen services take about 30 minutes. From Osaka Station, JR special rapid trains on the JR Kōbe Line run west through Kōbe and on to Himeji in about an hour. Both routes end at Himeji Station, which is a straight 15–20 minute walk up Otemachi-dōri to the castle gate.
Private railways such as Hanshin and Sanyō also connect Osaka and Himeji, usually with a change at Kōbe. They can be cheaper than JR but slower and less direct; check current timetables and fares before you commit. Highway buses run from Osaka to Himeji too, but for a trip this short the train is almost always faster.

A workable day: leave Osaka around 8am, reach Himeji by 9am, and walk to the castle while the light is still soft. The main keep is a six-storey wooden tower, and the stairs inside are steep — allow 60–90 minutes for the castle and the surrounding baileys. Kōko-en, the formal garden just west of the castle, is worth another 45–60 minutes.
After lunch, walk back through the shopping arcade toward the station, or add one of the smaller sights: the Senhime Shrine, the zoo next to the castle, or the Himeji City Museum of Art. Most travellers are back on a train by late afternoon and in Osaka for dinner.
