Where to stay in Oman: best areas and types of hotel

Oman is a driving country: where you sleep is decided by the loop you drive, not by one city. Most first trips run Muscat → Nizwa and the mountains → Wahiba Sands → Sur and Ras al Jinz → back to Muscat, so pick a base for each leg rather than commuting from the capital.

Prices swing with season. November to March is peak in the north, the khareef (Jun–Sep) is peak in Dhofar, and summer elsewhere is cheap but hot. Rates below are 2026 estimates for a double room per night, before tax and service — treat every figure as check and confirm current prices when you book.

Decide the shape of the trip first. If you have 7–10 days and one flight, do the northern loop and sleep in a different place every second night. If you want a beach week, split Muscat with Salalah or Musandam instead of adding more interior stops.

Then match the base to the transport. Muscat hotels cluster along the coast road, and district choice between Qurum, Al Khuwair and Muttrah is a judgement call — check current reviews and maps rather than trusting a single recommendation. A car is close to essential outside the capital, so choose places with parking; some mountain guesthouses sit behind a checkpoint and may need a 4WD to reach — check with the property before booking.

Book the fixed points early. Desert camps and mountain guesthouses have few rooms, so they can sell out for weekends and school holidays — check availability rather than assuming a fixed booking window. City hotels in Muscat are easier to book late, though rates often rise for Thursday and Friday nights and during major events — check.

Match the room to the climate. In summer, air conditioning and a pool matter more than a view; in the mountains, ask about heating, because Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar nights drop close to freezing in winter. In Salalah during the khareef, expect mist and rain and choose a hotel with covered parking if damp bothers you.

Finally, check the practical details before paying: distance to the airport, whether breakfast is included, cancellation terms, and whether the property arranges desert transfers or turtle permits at Ras al Jinz. Turtle viewing at Ras al Jinz is organised through the reserve, so staying nearby helps you take an early or late slot.

Oman is generally safe and hotel standards are high, but distances are longer than they look on a map and mountain roads are slow. Do not book a Muscat hotel and plan to day-trip to Nizwa, the dunes and Sur from it; you will spend the trip driving.

Alcohol is served in licensed hotel restaurants and bars, not in independent restaurants, so if a drink with dinner matters, stay in or near a hotel that serves it. Dress modestly away from resorts. During Ramadan, daytime service changes; check how it affects breakfast and pool access.

For insurance, check that your policy covers driving a rental car on unsealed roads and any desert or mountain activity you plan; many standard policies exclude them.
