Best time to visit Oman: weather and seasons by month

Oman is two destinations by season. The north — Muscat, the Batinah coast, the interior, the desert and Musandam — works from October to April and is at its best November to March. Dhofar and Salalah work in the khareef monsoon from late June to late September, or in dry winter weather.

Prices track the weather. Winter is peak: hotel rates, 4x4 hire and desert camps are highest from December to February and around Eid. The northern summer is the cheapest time to be in Muscat, but you will spend the middle of the day indoors.

Start with the region, not the month. If your trip is Muscat, Nizwa, Jebel Shams or Jebel Akhdar, Wahiba Sands, Sur and Ras al Jinz, aim for November to March. If Salalah and the Dhofar coast are the point, aim for the khareef, roughly late June to late September, or accept dry warm beach weather from December to March.

Then check the calendar. Ramadan and the two Eids move about 11 days earlier each year; in 2027 Ramadan is expected from about 8 February to 9 March, with Eid al-Fitr around 9–12 March and Eid al-Adha around 16 May — check before booking. During Ramadan, eating, drinking and smoking in public by day is an offence, cafés open after sunset, office and shop hours shorten, and alcohol service in hotels is reduced or stopped — check.

Then match the activity. Turtle watching at Ras al Jinz runs year-round, with nesting concentrated in the summer months and hatchlings from about September. Dhow cruises in Musandam are calmest in winter. Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams are the summer escape from coastal heat, but winter nights there sit near freezing.

Heat is the main risk, not rain. In May to August, Muscat and the interior regularly pass 40 °C and can reach 45–50 °C; plan outdoor sightseeing before 9am and after 5pm, carry water and expect midday to be indoor time. Coastal humidity in summer makes Muscat feel worse than the dry interior at the same temperature.

Cyclones are rare but not unknown on the Omani coast, most likely in May–June and October–November; they can close roads and wadis fill fast. Do not enter a wadi when rain is forecast anywhere upstream.

Mountain weather is its own thing: Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams sit 2,000–3,000 m up and run 10–15 °C cooler than Muscat, with winter nights near freezing. Bring a layer even in a warm-month trip if the mountains are on your route.
