Okeechobee is a small Florida Heartland city on the north shore of Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake in the contiguous United States. It is a cattle and fishing town, not a resort: the draw is the lake, the Herbert Hoover Dike and the prairie and rodeo country around it. You need a car, and one night covers it.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: there are no bus routes, taxis are on call only, and the lake, the dike and the state park are spread out. Rental desks exist in town — book ahead, as inventory is small. Amtrak's Silver Star and Silver Meteor stop in Okeechobee, but the station is not a base for seeing the lake without a vehicle.

Watch out

Safety

Okeechobee is a small town and violent crime is not the main worry for visitors. The real risks are summer heat and lightning, long empty roads with thin cell coverage, and driving at dusk when deer and cattle stray near the highway.
  • Summer heat and humidity are serious: carry water and plan lake or dike time for early morning.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are routine Jun–Sep; lightning on open water and the dike is a real hazard.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov: check forecasts and evacuation routes before a summer stay.
  • The dike is a working flood structure: stay on marked trail and bike surfaces, not the grass slopes.
  • Cell coverage and services thin out fast on the prairie and around the lake — fuel up in town.
